The Relation between Mean Corpuscular Volume and Age
Jang Lee-Chan

Abstract
Complete Blood Count(CBC) is frequently used in health checks and routine diagnosis. We wanted to further know the relationship between age and CBC. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between age and mean corpuscular volume(MCV). We reviewed 20553 complete blood count (CBC) lab reports from about 14 years between May-01-2005 and Nov-19-2018 at Chungbuk National University Hospital. The cases were aged between 11 and 95 years. Among these, there were 8697males(42.3%). All of them underwent health checks and no anemias was found. On a principal component analysis, MCVs had a similar direction and a larger width than age. In the ANOVA and post hoc tests, MCVs had the highest F-values among MCV, hemoglobin(Hb), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), red blood cells(RBC), red cell distribution width(RDW) and white blood cells(WBC). MCVs were most related to age. We restricted age to 39 and 79 years. The results were similar for all ages. We found that among Hb, MCV, MCHC, RDW and WBC, the MCV was most related to age.
